About this specialty
A family nurse practitioner (FNP) is a registered nurse with graduate-level training who provides primary care to patients of all ages, from children to seniors. FNPs perform physical exams, diagnose and treat common acute and chronic conditions, order and interpret tests, and prescribe medication.
In Texas, nurse practitioners prescribe under a prescriptive authority agreement with a delegating physician. Most FNPs work in primary care clinics, urgent care centers, and family practices, and they are often the first point of contact in areas with few physicians.
